Growing In Grace Every Day

Reflections On 2 Peter 3:18

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”
2 Peter 3:18

Growth is a natural part of life. Trees stretch upward, flowers bloom in season, and seeds quietly develop beneath the soil before anyone sees the evidence above ground. In the same way, God desires continual growth in the life of every believer. Spiritual maturity does not happen overnight—it is a lifelong journey of becoming more like Christ.

Peter closes his letter with a simple but powerful instruction: grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. These words remind us that the Christian life is never meant to remain stagnant. God invites us into a relationship that deepens, strengthens, and transforms us over time.

Growing In Grace

To grow in grace means learning to live more fully in the kindness, mercy, and love God has already given us. Many believers understand grace at salvation but struggle to continue walking in it daily.

Grace is not only what saves us—it is what sustains us.

We grow in grace when we learn to:

  • Rest in God’s love instead of striving for approval
  • Receive forgiveness when we fail
  • Extend patience and mercy to others
  • Trust God’s strength in our weakness

The more we understand His grace, the more our hearts are softened and our lives are changed.

Growing In Knowledge Of Christ

Peter also calls us to grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is more than gathering facts or memorizing verses. It means knowing Christ personally—learning His heart, understanding His ways, and walking closely with Him.

We grow in knowledge of Christ through:

  • Reading and meditating on Scripture
  • Spending time in prayer
  • Obeying what He teaches us
  • Watching His faithfulness unfold in our lives

The more we know Him, the more we trust Him. And the more we trust Him, the more peace and confidence we carry into everyday life.

Growth Often Happens Quietly

Sometimes we expect dramatic change, but spiritual growth is often slow and steady. It may look like:

  • Responding with patience where anger once ruled
  • Choosing prayer instead of panic
  • Trusting God in uncertainty
  • Showing kindness when it is difficult
  • Holding onto hope during trials

These quiet changes are evidence that God is working deeply within us.

If you feel like growth is slow, be encouraged. Roots grow before fruit appears. God is often doing His greatest work beneath the surface.

God Uses Every Season

The Lord uses many things to help us grow:

His Word teaches and renews us.
Trials strengthen our faith and dependence on Him.
Daily obedience shapes our character.
Waiting seasons develop patience and trust.

Even difficult seasons can become fertile ground for spiritual maturity when surrendered to God.

A Life That Brings Him Glory

Peter ends the verse by saying, “To Him be glory both now and forever!” This reminds us that growth is not ultimately about self-improvement—it is about glorifying Christ.

As we grow in grace and knowledge, our lives begin to reflect Him more clearly. Others see His love through our actions, His peace through our trust, and His joy through our endurance.

Growth in Christ becomes a testimony of His transforming power.

A Prayer For Growth

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me enough to keep growing me. Help me to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Teach me to trust You in every season and remain faithful in the daily process of transformation. Produce fruit in my life that brings glory to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Closing Reflection

Spiritual growth takes time, but God is faithful. Even when progress feels slow, He is still working. Keep seeking Him, keep trusting Him, and keep taking small steps of obedience.

The One who planted the seed of faith in you is also the One who will bring it to full bloom.
