While sitting on my back porch early in the afternoon, I heard a rumbling sound. I turned to my husband and asked, “Was that thunder I heard?” He looked at me and said, “It appears a thunderstorm is brewing.” As I gazed upward to the heavens, the clouds were dark and heavy, and the wind howled. It was time to seek refuge.

Life is full of changes. Life storms strike without warning or preparation. Someone comes to your front door; it is an officer in uniform. In a split second, you have horrific news to blow your socks off—your husband, daughter, or son has been in a serious accident—life-threatening news. Or you receive a phone call saying that your best friend had a heart attack and died. These storms catch you off guard, leaving you dizzy and numb. You try to wrap your head around everything, wondering what is happening, leaving you hanging on thin ice.
Life’s unexpected will come. We’re never to be blind-sighted when hit. Storms come in all shapes and sizes. They are no respecter of persons, whether rich or poor in material possessions. They hit families, friendships, and many others, causing damage to lives.
Jesus warns against life’s troubles that wound us spiritually, lest I forget God’s Word. While speaking to His disciples, He makes this statement. “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Jesus prepared their hearts for emotional storms of pain, hurt, and suffering.
Jesus taught the disciples about life’s storms, and we feel them too. I’ve had my reasonable amount, and I’ve learned to seek safety by relying on Him. Jesus is my peace in life’s storms as I lean upon His Word, which says, John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.”
I’ve experienced many unexpected storms. I’ve grown in trust, in God’s faithfulness, in His lovingkindness, grace, and goodness. They have deepened my Christian Walk while helping me become my best at bringing glory to Him. Trials humbled me as I surrendered to One who had complete control, knowing God is my shelter, fortress, and hope when weathering the storms of life.
Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
You can change life’s trajectory by finding refuge in the storms. When you recognize God’s presence in the storm, He is there, not allowing you to face the pain and hurt alone. You can regain strength and have hope. With Jesus by your side, facing bad news becomes easier to handle. His power fills and soothes your aching heart.
Isaiah 43:2 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
Rest In The Loving Arms Of Jesus:
Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Remember…
You can comfort yourself with Jesus’ words during a storm. Turn to Him in prayer. His Spirit gives you strength and courage (Romans 8:16). Storms don’t last forever. Eventually, they pass. While you wait, rely upon Him and rest in His bountiful grace. Believe that His presence remains constant with you. Know His ways are perfect; He never makes a mistake as He guides your life by His Sovereign power. Surrender it to Jesus, knowing He’s in control. In time, Jesus will calm your shaky heart, bring healing, and restore your soul as the winds cease.
