Finding Peace In a Troubled World

We live in a troubled world.

Bad news seems to surround us. The newspapers we read and the television programs we watch report wars, natural disasters, diseases, violence, and growing political tensions. In addition, our personal lives can be filled with difficult circumstances—divorce, financial struggles, family problems, health concerns, and the rising cost of living. This is certainly not an exhaustive list. Troubles come in many forms, and none of us is exempt from experiencing them.

Yet there are biblical practices that can calm our fears and quiet our hearts when difficult circumstances come. Most importantly, God promises to be with us through every storm of life. We can rest securely in His Word, which promises His presence, victory, and peace (Hebrews 13:5; 1 John 5:4; John 14:27). Faith becomes an anchor during troubling times because it turns our attention away from our circumstances and fixes our eyes upon Jesus.

Peace Through The Storm

Mark 4:38 gives us a beautiful picture of Jesus remaining unshaken in the middle of a violent storm. Jesus and His disciples were crossing the sea when a fierce storm arose. Waves crashed against the boat while Jesus slept. Terrified, the disciples awakened Him, fearing they would perish. Jesus stood and rebuked the wind and the sea, and immediately there was a great calm.

Through this miracle, Jesus revealed His divine authority over creation. He was Master of the sea and completely in control of their circumstances.

When we face the storms of life, we can remember that Jesus is in the boat with us. He sees our troubles, knows our fears, and understands the burdens we carry. The storm may continue for a season, but we do not face it alone. As we fix our eyes upon Jesus, we experience the inner peace that He alone can give (John 16:33). Jesus gives us courage to endure hardship because He has overcome the world.

The question is not whether storms will come, but where we will place our faith when they do. Instead of allowing fear to control our hearts, we can trust the One who has authority over every storm.

Peace Through Prayer

Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I admit that one of my weaknesses is focusing too much on my circumstances. When situations seem out of control, I can begin to worry and fret because I realize that I am not in control. Perhaps you can identify with that struggle. Human nature tries to fix situations that are not going our way instead of immediately turning to the Lord and surrendering our worries and anxieties to Him.

Turning to God in prayer is an expression of faith in His sovereignty. We release our troubles into His hands and acknowledge that He is all-powerful and possesses perfect wisdom to handle every situation we face. We can pray about everything, whether our concerns seem great or small. Nothing is too difficult for God, and nothing that concerns His children is insignificant to Him.

Paul also reminds us to pray with thanksgiving. Gratitude shifts our attention from what is wrong to the faithfulness of the One who is listening to our prayers. We remember how God has provided in the past, and we trust Him with what lies ahead. As we surrender our concerns to Him, His peace guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Peace Through Comfort

John 14:27” Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”

God’s Word brings comfort, and we find peace through His abiding presence. His peace strengthens us against the fears that trouble our hearts. Jesus invites us to bring our burdens to Him and find rest for our souls (Matthew 11:28). Remember, Jesus is our peace, and He is the Prince of Peace (Ephesians 2:14; Isaiah 9:6).

The world offers many temporary ways to escape stress. Vacations, recreation, outdoor activities, and times of relaxation can certainly be enjoyable and beneficial, but they cannot provide the lasting spiritual peace that comes from Christ. Circumstances change. Vacations end. Possessions wear out. Even relationships can disappoint us. If our peace depends entirely upon favorable circumstances, it will disappear when those circumstances change.

Jesus offers something far greater. His peace remains with us even when life is difficult. He tells us to take courage because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Our security rests not in a trouble-free life but in a victorious Savior who promises never to leave us.

Peace Through A Steadfast Mind

Isaiah 26:3, NASB, 1995, “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
Because he trusts in You.”

As Christians, we must guard our hearts because everything we do flows from them (Proverbs 4:23). We should also be careful about what we continually allow into our minds. The news, social media, conversations, and other influences can shape our thoughts and affect our spiritual peace.

Social media, for example, can be used for good. It allows believers to encourage one another, share testimonies, organize prayer groups, and spread the gospel. Yet it can also become a source of gossip, arguments, political controversy, comparison, and division. When we continually dwell upon disturbing or divisive things, our thoughts can become consumed with anxiety and unrest. Before long, our hearts become troubled and our peace is disturbed.

Isaiah teaches us that God keeps the steadfast mind in perfect peace because it trusts in Him. Perfect peace does not mean the absence of conflict, hardship, or sorrow. Rather, it describes a settled heart that remains secure because its confidence rests in God. The world around us may be shaking, but our hearts can remain anchored to the One who never changes.

When we experience God’s peace, we are trusting the promises of His Word rather than leaning entirely upon our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5–6). We surrender our worries, anxieties, fears, plans, and decisions to Him, believing that He is faithful to guide us. Surrender is a daily decision. As we present ourselves to God and renew our minds through His Word, we learn to rest more fully in Him (Romans 12:1–2).

Most importantly, the foundation of lasting peace is the cross. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we have been reconciled to God: “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Before we can fully understand the peace of God, we must first experience peace with God through Jesus Christ.

Promises Of Peace For Troubled Times

As we think about God’s peace, there are many Scriptures that can strengthen us during difficult seasons. I have often found that God’s promises speak directly to my heart when I need encouragement. Take time to meditate upon these passages, memorize them, and return to them whenever fear or anxiety begins to trouble your heart.

Psalm 46:1–3 (NASB):
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NASB):
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely, I will help you, surely, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

The world around us may never become completely peaceful. Troubles will come, circumstances will change, and uncertainty will remain a part of life. Yet the believer does not have to live with a heart controlled by fear. We have something the world cannot manufacture or take away—the presence and peace of Jesus Christ.

When the storm rages, remember that Jesus is with you. When anxiety rises, turn to Him in prayer. When your heart becomes troubled, rest in His promises. When disturbing circumstances fill your thoughts, deliberately fix your mind upon the Lord. His peace is greater than your circumstances because He is greater than anything you will ever face.
