Embracing Bravery In Life’s Uncertainty

People say it’s the unknown that worries me, not what I know. These preconceived notions reflect their thoughts about the future. They have uncertainties, fears, and even anxieties.

I’d admit I’ve struggled with the same thought patterns and unsettled feelings. If I knew what I’d face tomorrow, then I could be prepared to accept whatever comes my way. I’d avoid discouragement and any future disappointments. Unfortunately, God did not wire my brain to have that level of understanding. Instead of winging life on my own, God gave me His Word and Holy Spirit to give me peace in seasons of uncertainty.

In our faith walk, we recognize that facing the unknown is inevitable. For example, the doctor gives an upsetting report when x-rays show a mass; the neighbor dies, the car breaks down, and the kids get sick. We have a unique source of strength and encouragement in God, although life is uncertain. Although we can’t predict what happens tomorrow, God is our source of wisdom and hope.

Joshua Experienced Uncertainty

Joshua prepared to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. He faced an enormous task by leading the Hebrews, and he could have mixed feelings of fear and uncertainty. It was God’s Word that helped him have courage.

Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua recalled the mighty deeds God did in the land of Egypt through Moses’ leadership. As he saw God’s power to perform in Egypt, it helped him face any fears or uncertainties. It gave him renewed hope that, as God’s presence was with Moses, it would be with him as well. God’s Word gave Joshua tremendous courage to finish his task.

Moses Faced A Time Of Uncertainty

Moses made excuses. God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. He didn’t feel adequate to do the job that God had called him to. Moses depended on human strength rather than on God’s power to free the Israelites. However, it was God’s power working through Moses as His instrument that gave victory to the Hebrews.

Exodus 3:11-12 says, But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you.”  When you bring the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain. This will be the sign that I sent you.

God Is On Our Side

As believers, we’re no different from these men: Moses or Joshua. We, too, experience situations we fear, doubt, or worry about. None of us know the future; only God does. When life appears to be at its lowest point, focus on Jesus rather than the circumstances. Remember, God is on our side. God will carry us through every trial and every hardship, even though it seems our ship is sinking. He’s the ship’s Captain in control. In a storm or calm, he remains by our side. Although circumstances change, God doesn’t, because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

When you’re facing uncertainties, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and alone. But the Bible is your word of encouragement. Open God’s blessed Word to fill your heart with wisdom and to soothe your soul.

Romans 8:31 (NIV) declares, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

1. Trust In God’s Promises

An essential component of courage is to rest in God’s promises. Meditate on verses like Isaiah 41:10 NIV:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God always provides strength and support, never leaving us.

2. Pray And Depend Upon God

Prayer is a powerful way to have courage. When we communicate our fears and uncertainties to God, we invite His peace and guidance into our hearts. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) encourages us:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

3. Surround Yourself With Other Believers

Other believers can build your faith. They will support and encourage you in times of uncertainty. As you get involved, allow them to offer support, encouragement, and accountability. Hebrews 10:24–25 (NIV) reminds us:

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Final Thoughts:

Keep in mind that God is always with you, offering support and encouragement as you navigate life’s challenges.  Feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude as you place your trust in Him, have faith in His promises, and find solace in the support of your community, knowing that with God by your side, fear and worry cannot prevail.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Our hearts overflow with thankfulness for the constant reassurance of your presence. We ask that You help us remember Your promises and put our faith in Your unfailing love and strength whenever we are experiencing moments of uncertainty and dread. Please infuse our hearts with bravery and confidence, knowing that with you, we can persevere through any difficulty. Help us navigate our way, and may our lives reflect your glory. “In the name of Jesus, amen.”
