Choosing Your One Word For 2025

One Word Can Transform Your Year

Each year, our minds reminiscence of the past year. We desire to start a new year with a fresh beginning. Our commitments didn’t work last year. Instead of crafting a list of resolutions that fade by February, consider focusing on a single word? One Word approach offers clarity and purpose, allowing God to work deeply in a specific area of your life.

A tradition I have practiced each year is to pick One Word. The idea came from my pastor that encouraged his congregation to dump New Year’s Resolution. Instead, he suggested making a list of words and choose one from them to become the person in Christ God intends. This practice has been a cornerstone of my walk with Christ, shaping my spiritual growth, and helping me align my heart with His will. By seeking God’s direction and meditating on His Word, I’ve seen how One Word can spark transformation. It’s a means of spiritual renewal, allowing Christ to use this word to be conformed more to His perfect image. We achieve this through Christ’s inner transformation, not personal strength.

The Power Of Transformation

The word of my choice this year that seemed to grab my attention was transformation. It sparked a fuel in my soul. Romans 12:2 reminds us not to conform to worldly patterns, but to renew our minds and be transformed.

While delving deeper into the Word, I discovered other Scriptures with a similar mindset.

  • 2 Corinthians 3:18: “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come”
  • Psalm 51:10-12: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me”
  • Philippians 3:12-14: “Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus”

Through God’s power, He is transforming us. This journey is hard, but God’s grace guides us. Like a butterfly’s metamorphosis, it’s a challenging process. God’s refining me through these experiences. We are becoming more glorious as we draw closer to Him (2 Corinthians 3:18). God’s Word, prayer, and submission bring transformation.

How To Choose Your Word

If you’re ready to embrace this tradition, begin with prayer. Ask God to reveal a word that reflects His plan for your spiritual growth. Read scripture, paying attention to verses or themes that resonate with your heart. For me, the book of Psalm often provides inspiration, and one word often stands out, leaping off the page as God’s guidance becomes clear.

Once you’ve chosen your word, make it part of your daily walk. Write it, place it where you’ll see it often, and let it guide your prayers and reflections. Allow scripture to reinforce your focus, like 2 Corinthians 5:17, which speaks of becoming a new creation in Christ, or Psalm 51:10, which calls for a renewed spirit.

Words To Ponder

I desire spiritual renewal to become the person in Christ created in His perfect image. God’s Word is my mirror and speaks to my heart about what I must do. I yield myself to Christ, and I study, read, and take time for meditation on His precious Word. Once the Word is in my heart, a radical change occurs. I need to absorb God’s Word and let Him transform me. The Word of God changes my outlook from a worldview to a Biblical worldview. What I allow my mind to dwell upon is what I become. My mind forms a conviction in my heart of truths, and the heart carries into action. I have to exchange human thinking for the mind of Christ, which embodies God’s truth. I cannot know His will without submission to His Word and control of my heart.

Living Out Your Word

The work of God is that He is transforming our lives. We submit to Him to transform our lives by meditation, yielding, and obeying. As Romans 12:1 reminds us, offering ourselves as living sacrifices is an act of worship and the starting point for spiritual renewal. To embrace transformation has meant surrendering anxiety and fear, replacing them with God’s truth. As my mind dwells on Scripture, it shapes my convictions and actions. The world’s noise fades, and God’s voice becomes clearer. Through this process, I’ve seen how focusing on one word brings clarity, growth, and joy in Christ.

Your One Word

Your One Word isn’t just a goal; it’s a pathway for God to work deeply in your life. Whether your word is peace, faith, gratitude, or transformation, it becomes a lens through which you see His hand guiding your steps. The key is submission by allowing His Word and Spirit to do the transforming work.

What will your word be for 2025? Pray, seek, and trust that God will lead you. Then, step into the year with anticipation, knowing He will use your word to shape you into the person He’s called you to be.

Do you choose a Word in which to focus each year? If so, will you share it?
